📘 A Doctrinal Dissertation on Law, Covenant, and Discipleship in the Teachings of Jesus Christ

I. Introduction: The Pattern of Divine Law

In the restored gospel, law is not merely a civil structure but a divine pattern.
The Book of Mormon teaches that “there is a law given, and a punishment affixed, and a repentance granted” (Alma 42), framing law as the architecture of agency, accountability, and mercy.

Jesus Christ, in mortality and in resurrected ministry, consistently taught:

- Obedience to divine law
- Respect for civil law
- Covenant loyalty to God above all earthly ties
- A moral pattern for discipleship

This dissertation examines these themes through LDS scripture.

II. Christ and Civil Law: “Render unto Caesar”

A. Jesus’ Teaching on Obedience to Civil Authority

In the New Testament, Christ taught:

> “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21)

The Doctrine and Covenants reinforces this principle:

- D&C 58:21–22 teaches that Saints are to obey, honor, and sustain the law.
- D&C 134 declares that governments exist to secure rights and that citizens are bound to uphold the law unless it violates conscience and divine command.

B. The Book of Mormon’s Witness

The Nephite record repeatedly affirms that righteous societies uphold law:
- Mosiah 29 teaches that laws should protect agency and prevent oppression.
- Alma 12 shows that when people reject law, chaos follows.

Thus, discipleship includes lawful living—not as mere compliance, but as covenantal integrity.

III. Covenant Morality and the Law of Chastity

A. The Law of Chastity in LDS Doctrine

The restored gospel teaches a clear sexual ethic:

- Sexual relations are reserved for marriage between a man and a woman.

This is taught in:

- D&C 42:22–24 (commandments regarding fidelity and chastity)
- Jacob 2 (condemnation of sexual sin and misuse of sacred powers)

B. Jesus’ Higher Law

Christ elevated the moral law:

> “Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery already in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28)

The Book of Mormon echoes this:

- 3 Nephi 12 (Christ’s Sermon at the Temple) reaffirms the higher law of purity.

C. Orientation vs. Behavior

LDS doctrine distinguishes between:

- Orientation (not a sin)
- Behavior (subject to commandments)

The Church teaches compassion, dignity, and belonging for all people, including LGBTQ individuals, while still upholding the law of chastity as a covenant standard.

This is crucial:
Doctrine addresses behavior, not identity.
Every soul is precious.

IV. Divine Priority: God First, Family Second

A. Christ’s Radical Call to Discipleship

Jesus taught that loyalty to God supersedes all earthly ties:

> “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37)

- 2 Nephi 31 teaches that discipleship requires “full purpose of heart.”
- Mosiah 5 describes covenant identity as taking upon oneself the name of Christ above all other affiliations.

B. The Doctrine and Covenants on Covenant Priority

- D&C 101:4–5 teaches that disciples are “chastened and tried” to prove their loyalty.
- D&C 98 teaches that God’s law is supreme and that disciples must act with meekness, patience, and covenant fidelity.

C. Family as a Sacred Stewardship

While God comes first, family is not diminished—it is sanctified:

- The Family Proclamation teaches that family is central to God’s plan.
- D&C 68:25–28 commands parents to teach children faith, repentance, and obedience.

Putting God first strengthens family, rather than replacing it.

V. The Pattern of Christ: Obedience, Sacrifice, and Example

A. Christ as the Perfect Law‑Keeper

In 3 Nephi 15:9, Jesus declares:

> “I am the law, and the light.”

He fulfilled the law (3 Nephi 12:17) and lived in perfect obedience to the Father (John 5:19).

B. Discipleship as Emulation

Christ commands:

> “What manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am.” (3 Nephi 27:27)

This includes:

- Obedience
- Purity
- Covenant loyalty
- Respect for law
- Charity toward all

C. The Book of Mormon’s Emphasis on Example

- Alma 7 teaches that Christ’s life is the pattern for ours.
- 3 Nephi 18:24 commands disciples to “hold up [His] light”—meaning His works, not our own.

VI. Law, Agency, and Accountability

A. Agency Requires Law

Alma teaches:

> “Without law, there is no sin… and without sin, no righteousness.” (Alma 42)

Law is the framework that makes agency meaningful.

B. Justice and Mercy in Harmony

The Atonement satisfies justice while enabling repentance:

- 2 Nephi 2
- Alma 34

Thus, commandments are not burdens—they are the structure through which Christ redeems and transforms us.

VII. Conclusion: The Covenant Path as the Law of Christ

The restored gospel teaches:

- Obey civil law
- Live the law of chastity
- Place God above all earthly ties
- Follow Christ’s example in all things

But it also teaches:

- Every person is loved by God
- Every soul is invited to Christ
- Every disciple must act with compassion, humility, and mercy

The law of Christ is not merely a list of rules—it is a covenantal way of being, a life patterned after the Savior, illuminated by His grace, and grounded in His love.
