Emulating Goodness from Example

Following the Lord’s Prophet Brings Joy!

Helaman 11:18

“And behold, the people did rejoice and glorify God, and the whole face of the land was filled with rejoicing; and they did no more seek to destroy Nephi, but they did esteem him as a great prophet, and a man of God, having great power and authority given unto him from God.”

What Helaman 11:18 Teaches Us

Takeaway: When we follow the Lord’s prophet, joy fills the land and joy fills our souls.

The people had suffered famine, war, pride, and spiritual blindness. But when they finally recognized Nephi as a great prophet—a man God Himself empowered—their hearts changed. And the result was unmistakable:

  • Rejoicing
  • Unity
  • Peace
  • A return to God

This is the pattern:
When we honor the prophet, we align ourselves with heaven, and heaven fills us with joy.

Why “great prophet” is cross‑referenced to Helaman 10:5–11

"Behold, I give unto you power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven; and thus shall ye have power among this people."

Helaman 10:7 (5–11) is the moment God declares Nephi great:

  • God trusts Nephi because he seeks no power, no glory, only God’s will.
  • God gives Nephi power to seal and loose, to command the elements, to speak and have heaven honor his words.
  • God says Nephi has unwearyingness, purity, and integrity.

This is why the people in Helaman 11:18 finally “esteem him as a great prophet.”
They are recognizing what God had already declared.

We learn:
When we follow the prophet, we are not following a man—we are following the voice God has chosen.

Why This Scripture Fits the Dissection “Following the Lord’s Prophet Brings Joy!”

Helaman 11:18 is a perfect doctrinal anchor because:

  • The people’s joy is directly tied to their recognition of the prophet.
  • Their rejoicing comes after they stop resisting the prophet.
  • Their peace comes after they align with God’s chosen messenger.
  • Their unity comes after they stop trying to destroy the prophet and instead honor him.

Joy follows obedience.
Obedience follows trust.
Trust follows recognizing God’s voice in His prophet.

This is the celestial pattern for us today.

The Principle

When we follow the prophet, we receive joy, protection, unity, and spiritual power.

Prophets are not merely advisors. They are:

  • God’s watchmen
  • God’s mouthpieces
  • God’s covenant guides
  • God’s authorized servants

When we follow them, we are following Christ, because Christ directs them.

The Celestial Spiritual Growth We Receive

Following the prophet develops in us:

  • Humility — we yield our will to God’s will.
  • Discernment — we learn to hear God’s voice in His servants.
  • Unity — we join Zion instead of resisting it.
  • Obedience — we practice covenant loyalty.
  • Joy — the fruit of aligning with heaven.
  • Protection — spiritual and sometimes physical.
  • Celestial identity — we become the kind of souls who can live in God’s presence.

This is why the people in Helaman 11:18 rejoiced.
This is why we rejoice when we follow the prophet today.

How the “Follow the Prophet” Children’s Song Reinforces This Doctrine

The song is not childish—it is celestial training.
Each verse is a case study in the Helaman 11:18 pattern:

Adam
He followed God → creation flourished → we learn to follow God’s order.

Enoch
A whole city followed the prophet → Zion → translated joy.

Noah
Those who ignored the prophet perished; those who followed were saved.

Abraham
Following the prophet brought covenant promises and generational blessings.

Moses
Israel struggled when they resisted; progressed when they followed.

Samuel
A child prophet teaches us that God calls whom He will.

Jonah
Running from the prophet’s call brings storms; obeying brings deliverance.

Daniel
Obedience to God’s law brings divine protection.

Our Day
The song ends with our world—confused, chaotic, loud.
But the pattern remains:

“We can get direction all along our way,
If we heed the prophets—follow what they say.”

This is Helaman 11:18 in musical form.

Our Communal Ministry Voice

As a people, we declare:

  • We rejoice when we follow the prophet.
  • We find clarity when we follow the prophet.
  • We build Zion when we follow the prophet.
  • We grow celestial roots when we follow the prophet.
  • We walk the covenant path with confidence because the prophet “knows the way.”

This is not blind obedience.
This is covenant trust.
