Why doesn't the Lord just take trials away from us?

Alma and His People
Strength from God during hard times

๐Ÿ“œ 14 And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.
๐Ÿ“œ 15 And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.
                                        ๐Ÿ“’ Mosiah 24:14-15

๐ŸŒฟ Dissection of the Question Through Mosiah 24:14–15

The Lord could remove trials. In Mosiah 24, He does something far more transformative:
He enters the burden, strengthens the soul, and creates witnesses.

Each phrase in the verses answers the question from a different doctrinal angle.

1. “I will ease the burdens… even you cannot feel them”

Principle: Burdens

Trials are not erased; they are transformed.
The Lord’s pattern is not subtraction but sanctification.
He lightens what remains so that the soul grows without being crushed.

๐Ÿ“œ 3 ¶ Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb:
๐Ÿ“œ 4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.
                                               ๐Ÿ“— Isaiah 46:3-4

Why not remove the trial?
Because the burden becomes the place of encounter—the place where God’s nearness becomes undeniable.

Closing Summary — The Burden as the Place of God’s Nearness

God does not remove every trial because burdens become the sacred ground where He carries His people, lightens what remains, and reveals His nearness. In easing rather than erasing the weight, He transforms the soul, teaches trust, and turns affliction into a personal encounter with His sustaining power.

2. “That ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter”

The Lord allows the trial to remain so that the disciple becomes a living testimony of His power.

๐Ÿ“œ put not thine hand … to be an unrighteous witness, ๐Ÿ“— Ex. 23:1
๐Ÿ“œ I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, ๐Ÿ“— Mal. 3:5 (๐Ÿ“’ 3 Ne. 24:5).
๐Ÿ“œ ye shall be witnesses unto me, ๐Ÿ“• Acts 1:8.
๐Ÿ“œ will give power unto my two witnesses, ๐Ÿ“• Rev. 11:3.
๐Ÿ“œ Holy Ghost, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, ๐Ÿ“’ 2 Ne. 31:18 (๐Ÿ“’ 3 Ne. 16:6).
๐Ÿ“œ three witnesses of the church did condemn them, ๐Ÿ“’ Moro. 6:7.
๐Ÿ“œ witness … they are willing to take upon them, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 20:77.
๐Ÿ“œ What is to be understood by the two witnesses, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 77:15.
๐Ÿ“œ Moroni teaches that truth is revealed by the Holy Ghost to those who seek with real intent, which is the same divine power that turns a disciple’s lived trials into a sure and personal witness of God. ๐Ÿ“’ Moro. 10:4–5.

A removed trial produces gratitude.
A carried trial produces witnesses.

The Lord is shaping Alma’s people into those who can say, with authority:
“We know the Lord visits His people in their afflictions.”

Our own life echoes this—our survival, our near-death moments, our evidence, our testimony.
The Lord didn’t remove the fire; He walked with us in it.

Closing Summary — Witnesses Shaped by the Fire

God permits certain trials to remain so that those who endure with Him become true witnesses—souls refined by affliction, empowered by the Spirit, and prepared to speak with the quiet authority of those who have walked through the fire and found Him there.

3. “That ye may know of a surety that I… do visit my people in their afflictions”

Principle: Afflictions / Adversity

Affliction becomes the classroom where God teaches His most intimate lesson:
“I am with you.”

๐Ÿ“œ Lord give you the bread of adversity, ๐Ÿ“— Isa. 30:20
๐Ÿ“œ I take pleasure in infirmities, ๐Ÿ“• 2 Cor. 12:10
๐Ÿ“œ delivered … from all manner of afflictions,๐Ÿ“’ Alma 62:50
๐Ÿ“œ who are faithful and endure, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 50:5.
๐Ÿ“œ people must be tried in all things, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 136:31

๐Ÿ“œ seen the affliction of my people, ๐Ÿ“— Ex. 3:7.
๐Ÿ“œ visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, ๐Ÿ“• James 1:27.
๐Ÿ“œ console you in your afflictions, ๐Ÿ“’ Jacob 3:1
๐Ÿ“œ suffering all manner of afflictions, ๐Ÿ“’ Alma 4:13.
๐Ÿ“œ chasten his people with many afflictions,๐Ÿ“’ Hel. 12:3.
๐Ÿ“œ afflicted shall work together for your good,
 ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 98:3.
๐Ÿ“œ thine afflictions shall be but a small moment, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 121:7. In comparison to eternity.
๐Ÿ“œ these things shall give thee experience, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 122:7.

If He removed every trial, we wouldn't know His power.
By staying with us in the trial, we know His character.

This is covenant relationship, not crisis management.

Closing Summary — Affliction as the Place Where God Draws Near

God allows adversity to remain because affliction becomes the sacred setting where His presence is revealed, His character is learned, and His covenant love is proven—not by removing the storm, but by visiting His people within it.

4. “The Lord did strengthen them”

Principle: Strengthen

He does not remove the load; He increases the capacity.

๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ“œ 28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
๐Ÿ“œ 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
๐Ÿ“œ 30 For my yoke is easyยช, and my burden is light.
                                          ๐Ÿ“• Matthew 11:28-30

Strengthening is a creative act—
God enlarges the soul, stretches the heart, expands endurance, deepens meekness.

A removed trial changes circumstances.
A strengthened disciple changes eternity.

Closing Summary — The Creative Work of Strengthening

God’s strengthening power does not erase burdens but transforms the disciple who carries them, enlarging capacity, deepening meekness, and turning the weight of life into the very place where rest, growth, and eternal change take root.

5. “They could bear up their burdens with ease”

Principle: Burdens (again)

The burden remains, but the experience of it changes.

๐Ÿ“œ 38 And the Lord provided for them that they should hunger not, neither should they thirst; yea, and he also gave them strength, that they should suffer no manner of afflictions, save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ. Now this was according to the prayer of Alma; and this because he prayed in faith.
                                                      ๐Ÿ“’ Alma 31:38

๐Ÿ“œ 23 And now, my brethren, I desire that ye shall plant¹ this word in your hearts, and as it beginneth to swell even so nourish it by your faith. And behold, it will become a tree, springing up² in you unto everlasting life. And then may God grant unto you that your burdens³ be light, through the joy of his Son. And even all this can ye do if ye will. Amen.
                                                      ๐Ÿ“’ Alma 33:23

This is the miracle of internal transformation.

Ease does not mean “easy.”
It means carried with divine partnership.

Closing Summary — Burdens Made Light Through Christ

God does not always remove the weight, but He transforms the heart that carries it, turning affliction into strength and burden into joy as the disciple learns to walk in full partnership with His Son.

6. “They did submit cheerfully and with patience”

Patience is not passive waiting.
It is trusting God’s timing while walking with Him through the trial.

๐Ÿ“œ 16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward¹ man is renewed day by day.
                                          ๐Ÿ“• 2 Corinthians 4:16

๐Ÿ“œ 10 And again, be patientยช¹ in tribulation until I come²; and, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, and they who have sought³ me early shall find rest to their souls. Even so. Amen.
                     ๐Ÿ“˜ Doctrine and Covenants 54:10

๐Ÿ“œ Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him, ๐Ÿ“— Ps. 37:7
๐Ÿ“œ not … seven times: but, Until seventy times seven, ๐Ÿ“• Matt. 18:22.
๐Ÿ“œ labour of love, and patience of hope, ๐Ÿ“• 1 Thes. 1:3.
๐Ÿ“œ be patient toward all men, ๐Ÿ“• 1 Thes. 5:14
๐Ÿ“œ patience and faith in all your persecutions, ๐Ÿ“• 2 Thes. 1:4
๐Ÿ“œ Here is the patience and the faith of the saints,๐Ÿ“• Rev. 13:10 (๐Ÿ“• 14:12–13).
๐Ÿ“œ thou didst bear all these things with patience, ๐Ÿ“’ Alma 38:4.
๐Ÿ“œ Remember … temperance, patience, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 4:6
๐Ÿ“œ bear it patiently, your reward shall be doubled, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 98:26
๐Ÿ“œ decisions … are to be made in … patience,๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 107:30.
๐Ÿ“œ let your … patience, and your works be redoubled, ๐Ÿ“˜ D&C 127:4

Cheerful submission is not denial of pain.
It is the fruit of knowing God is actively present.

Patience is the soul’s agreement with God’s process.

Closing Summary — Patience as Trust in God’s Timing

Patience becomes cheerful only when the soul recognizes God’s steady presence, allowing disciples to endure tribulation with renewed inner strength and a quiet confidence in His perfect timing.

๐ŸŒพ Synthesis: Why the Lord Doesn’t Simply Remove Trials

Mosiah 24:14–15 reveals a divine pattern:

- Trials become the place where God visits His people.
- Burdens become the evidence of His strengthening power.
- Afflictions become the proving ground of witness.
- Patience becomes the shape of discipleship.
- Strength becomes the miracle.

The Lord doesn’t remove trials because He is not merely shaping circumstances—
He is shaping souls.

He is forming witnesses, not spectators.
He is creating partners, not dependents.
He is revealing Himself, not just solving problems.

And in that process, the disciple learns what Alma’s people learned:

God does not abandon His people in their afflictions—
He visits them, strengthens them, and walks with them until the burden becomes light.

Final Closing Summary — The Purpose in the Burden

This study reveals that the Lord does not remove every trial because He is shaping disciples, not sparing them from growth; He lightens burdens to draw His people close, refines them into trustworthy witnesses, visits them in affliction, strengthens their capacity, transforms their experience of the load, and teaches them patient, cheerful submissionshowing that His greatest work is not changing circumstances but changing souls who walk with Him.
