Why is it so important to follow Gods commandments?

Why is it so important to follow gods commandments?

📒 3 Nephi 15
📜 9 Behold, I am the law, and the light. Look unto me, and endure to the end, and ye shall live; for unto him that endureth to the end will I give eternal life.
📍 Slide 1: Law
- Christ declares: “I am the law.”
- Not just a giver of commandments—He embodies divine order.
- To follow the law is to align with His nature. It’s not just obedience; it’s union.

📒 2 Nephi 26
📜 1 And after Christ shall have risen from the dead he shall show himself unto you, my children, and my beloved brethren; and the words which he shall speak unto you shall be the law which ye shall do.

Question for you: What does it mean for Christ to be the law, rather than just teach it?
💡 Slide 2: Light
- “I am the light.”
- Light reveals, guides, warms, and protects.
- His commandments illuminate the path through moral fog and spiritual darkness.

📗 Isaiah 60
📜 19 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.

📕 Luke 2
📜 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

📒 3 Nephi 15
📜 9 Behold, I am the law, and the light. Look unto me, and endure to the end, and ye shall live; for unto him that endureth to the end will I give eternal life.

📘 Doctrine and Covenants 93
📜 9 The light and the Redeemer of the world; the Spirit of truth, who came into the world, because the world was made by him, and in him was the life of men and the light of men.

Let’s pause here: If Christ is both law and light, how do those roles interact? Does light soften law—or does law give structure to light?
🧭 Slide 3: Look unto me
- A command and an invitation.
- Not “look at the rules,” but “look unto Me.”
- Following commandments begins with relationship, not regulation.

Look unto Jesus Christ
  By Elder Kim B. Clark
 Of the Seventy
April 2019
"If we look to Jesus Christ, He will help us live our covenants and magnify our calling as elders in Israel."

Reflection: How does “looking unto Him” change the way we endure commandments?
🛡️ Slide 4: Endure to the end
- Endurance isn’t passive—it’s active loyalty.
- Through trials, temptations, and weariness, we cling to Him.
- Commandments become anchors, not burdens.

📕 Matthew 10
🗝📜 22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
📜 23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
📜 24 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.
📜 25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
📜 26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
📜 27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.
📜 28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
📜 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
📜 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
📜 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
📜 32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
📜 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

📕 Mark 13
📜 13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

📒 2 Nephi 31
📜 20 Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.

📒 Alma 32
🗝📜 13 And now, because ye are compelled to be humble blessed are ye; for a man sometimes, if he is compelled to be humble, seeketh repentance; and now surely, whosoever repenteth shall find mercy; and he that findeth mercy and endureth to the end the same shall be saved.
📜 14 And now, as I said unto you, that because ye were compelled to be humble ye were blessed, do ye not suppose that they are more blessed who truly humble themselves because of the word?
📜 15 Yea, he that truly humbleth himself, and repenteth of his sins, and endureth to the end, the same shall be blessed—yea, much more blessed than they who are compelled to be humble because of their exceeding poverty.

📒 3 Nephi 27
🗝📜 6 And whoso taketh upon him my name, and endureth to the end, the same shall be saved at the last day.
📜 7 Therefore, whatsoever ye shall do, ye shall do it in my name; therefore ye shall call the church in my name; and ye shall call upon the Father in my name that he will bless the church for my sake.
📜 8 And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel.
📜 9 Verily I say unto you, that ye are built upon my gospel; therefore ye shall call whatsoever things ye do call, in my name; therefore if ye call upon the Father, for the church, if it be in my name the Father will hear you;
📜 10 And if it so be that the church is built upon my gospel then will the Father show forth his own works in it.
📜 11 But if it be not built upon my gospel, and is built upon the works of men, or upon the works of the devil, verily I say unto you they have joy in their works for a season, and by and by the end cometh, and they are hewn down and cast into the fire, from whence there is no return.
📜 12 For their works do follow them, for it is because of their works that they are hewn down; therefore remember the things that I have told you.
📜 13 Behold I have given unto you my gospel, and this is the gospel which I have given unto you—that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me.
📜 14 And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me, that as I have been lifted up by men even so should men be lifted up by the Father, to stand before me, to be judged of their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil—
📜 15 And for this cause have I been lifted up; therefore, according to the power of the Father I will draw all men unto me, that they may be judged according to their works.
📜 16 And it shall come to pass, that whoso repenteth and is baptized in my name shall be filled; and if he endureth to the end, behold, him will I hold guiltless before my Father at that day when I shall stand to judge the world.
📜 17 And he that endureth not unto the end, the same is he that is also hewn down and cast into the fire, from whence they can no more return, because of the justice of the Father.

Prompt: What does endurance look like in your pilgrimage? Is it physical, emotional, mythic?
🌱 Slide 5: Live
- “Ye shall live.”
- Not just survive—live in fullness, purpose, and divine presence.
- Commandments are the architecture of eternal life.

📗 Leviticus 18
📜 5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the Lord.

📕 John 11
📜 25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

📘 Doctrine and Covenants 84
📜 44 For you shall live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God.
👑 Slide 6: Eternal life
- The promise: “I will give eternal life.”
- Not earned, but given—a gift to those who endure.
- Commandments are not hoops to jump through, but steps toward divine inheritance.

Choose Eternal Life
  By Elder Randall K. Bennett
 Of the Seventy
October 2011
"Your eternal destiny will not be the result of chance but of choice. It is never too late to begin to choose eternal life!"
