📒 3 Nephi 11
📜 23 Verily I say unto you, that whoso repenteth of his sins through your words, and desireth to be baptized in my name, on this wise shall ye baptize them—Behold, ye shall go down and stand in the water, and in my name shall ye baptize them.
Baptism is entered by repentance through Christ’s words, moved by true desire, and sealed by standing in the water in His name.
- Baptism begins with teaching and testimony. “Through your words” means the spoken witness of Christ’s doctrine.
- Words are not empty sounds—they carry covenantal weight. They awaken repentance, stir faith, and invite transformation.
- In baptism, the spoken formula (“in the name of Jesus Christ”) is not just ritual—it seals the act with divine authority.
📒 Mosiah 26
🗝📜15 Blessed art thou, Alma, and blessed are they who were baptized in the waters of Mormon. Thou art blessed because of thy exceeding faith in the words alone of my servant Abinadi.
📜 16 And blessed are they because of their exceeding faith in the words alone which thou hast spoken unto them.
📒 3 Nephi 12
📜 2 And again, more blessed are they who shall believe in your words because that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins.
Baptism is blessed when faith is stirred by words of testimony—words that awaken repentance, kindle desire, and seal covenant. Those who believe, humble themselves, and stand in the water are visited with fire and the Holy Ghost, receiving remission and renewal in Christ’s name.
- Baptism is not coerced; it flows from inner longing. “Whoso desireth” emphasizes agency and yearning.
- Desire is the bridge between repentance and action. It is the heart’s cry for cleansing, renewal, and belonging.
- Without desire, baptism is hollow. With desire, it becomes a covenant of love—an outward act springing from inward devotion.
Qualifications for Baptism
📕 Acts 2
📜 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
📜 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
📜 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
📜 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
📜 37 ¶ Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
🗝📜38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
📜 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
📜 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
🗝📜41 ¶ Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
📕 Acts 8
🗝📜37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

📕 Acts 19

📒 Moroni 6
📜 2 Neither did they receive any unto baptism save they came forth with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, and witnessed unto the church that they truly repented of all their sins.
📜 3 And none were received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end.
📘 Doctrine and Covenants 20
📜 37 And again, by way of commandment to the church concerning the manner of baptism—All those who humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized, and come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits, and witness before the church that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end, and truly manifest by their works that they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be received by baptism into his church.
📜 71 No one can be received into the church of Christ unless he has arrived unto the years of accountability before God, and is capable of repentance.
📚 Moses 6
📜 57 Wherefore teach it unto your children, that all men, everywhere, must repent, or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God, for no unclean thing can dwell there, or dwell in his presence; for, in the language of Adam, Man of Holiness is his name, and the name of his Only Begotten is the Son of Man, even Jesus Christ, a righteous Judge, who shall come in the meridian of time.
Baptism is entered not by compulsion but by desire—repentance pricking the heart, belief in Jesus Christ, and a broken, contrite spirit. Those who humbly long to take His name, determined to serve Him to the end, are received into covenant, cleansed, and gifted with the Holy Ghost.
- “Ye shall go down and stand in the water.” This is physical, but also symbolic.
- To stand is to take a position—firm, visible, and unashamed. It is readiness before God and witness before others.
- Standing in the water marks the threshold: the old life behind, the new life ahead. It is both humility (submitting to immersion) and courage (publicly declaring faith).
📒 3 Nephi 19
📜 10 And when they had thus prayed they went down unto the water’s edge, and the multitude followed them.
🗝📜11 And it came to pass that Nephi went down into the water and was baptized.
📜 12 And he came up out of the water and began to baptize. And he baptized all those whom Jesus had chosen.
📜 13 And it came to pass when they were all baptized and had come up out of the water, the Holy Ghost did fall upon them, and they were filled with the Holy Ghost and with fire.
To stand in the water is to cross the threshold—humble in submission, bold in witness. As Nephi and the multitude showed, standing leads to immersion, rising renewed, and receiving the Holy Ghost with fire. Baptism is both posture and promise: the old life laid down, the new life raised in Christ.
